Online Basic Driver Improvement Course Benefits

Completion of National Safety Council’s Online Basic Driver Improvement Course, allows drivers the opportunity to avoid up to 2 points on their record as well as certain ticket information from being sent to insurance companies. The driver must be eligible to take the course and may only avoid points one time under this program.

How long is the Online Basic Driver Improvement Course?

All online defensive driving courses approved by the Michigan DOS are required to be no less than 4 hours. This online defensive driving course fulfills that requirement. Our online defensive driving course is fully narrated, providing an easier user experience than other courses that require reading through content or which charge an additional fee for narration. You may take the online defensive driving course in increments at your leisure, with a convenient built-in bookmark feature that allows you to return where you left off. Please note the course must be completed within 30 days.

How do you receive your Basic Driver Improvement Course benefits?

Upon completion, NSC will electronically notify the Michigan DOS (Department of State). If you are eligible, the DOS will automatically apply your point reduction to your driving record. Additionally, upon completion of the course, you can print your own certificate and retain for your records.

Who should take the Online Basic Driver Improvement Course?

You will receive a letter in the mail if you are eligible for this program. You may be eligible if you were ticketed on or after December 31, 2010 and:

  • You have a valid, non-commercial license, with two or fewer points on your record,
  • The violation was not in a Commercial Motor Vehicle,
  • The violation was not a criminal offense,
  • The ticket you received is eligible (e.g., must be for three or fewer points, not for careless or negligent driving, etc.) For a full list, please visit the michigan.gov website.

    State Processing Fee: The Michigan Department of State requires all course providers to directly submit your completion information to them electronically along with a mandatory state processing fee. The current state processing fee is $17.00.
