BCAA launches Mature Driver Program

The BC Automobile Association (BCAA) Traffic Safety Foundation material encourages self-awareness, attention to medical conditions and prescription medication effects, and offers useful self-assessment tools. Mature Drivers and their family members are treated to an approach that empowers mature drivers to make responsible and informed decisions regarding their mobility needs, with greater knowledge of the risks, consequences and benefits for everyone concerned.

The Canadian Driving Research Initiative for Vehicular Safety in the Elderly CanDRIVE held their second Biennial Scientific Conference January 20-22, in Ottawa. Great teamwork by over sixty participants.

BCMA Emergency Medical Services Committee to discuss a new process for updating the BC "Guide to Drive"

For July 5, 2004 agenda - We plan to test this process with the proposed implementation of new hearing guidelines, to align them with recent national standards. The review process will be inclusive and timely. If well accepted, expect more updates on specific conditions in the next few months.

BCMA Board endorses continued BCMA involvement in the Driver Fitness Advisory Group

April 3, 2004 - The BCMA will work with other Health Professions, and their respective Colleges, in a planning process with the Office of the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles. The goal is to develop better, more practical and evidence-based approaches, to assist practitioners in the appropriate management of drivers with medical conditions that may render them unsafe to drive.

BC Driving Assessment Resources Updated

February, 2004 - Information about the Driver Rehab Centre has been added to the resources section of the site. We have invited other BC rehabilitation resources to submit program descriptions and contact information.

College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC Newsletter

May, 2003 - The spring 2003 issue (#40) of the College Quarterly announced Amendments to the Motor Vehicle Act that now provide liability protection to BC practitioners when they report a patient to the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles because of the existence of a medical condition that makes it unsafe to drive. The newsletter also announced that, for your ease of reference, the Guide for Physicians in Determining Medical Fitness to Drive a Motor Vehicle is now available electronically at this web site.

BCMA Board Endorses Continuing with the "Guide to Drive"

April 12, 2003 - The Board of Directors of the British Columbia Medical Association passed resolutions supporting the continued development of the Guide to Physicians in Determining Medical Fitness to Drive. The last full edition was published in 1997 and was used as a model for the CMA Guide. The Board also endorsed shifting to evidence-based recommendations from the mostly expert-opinion-consensus model used in the past.
