Terms of Reference

The Emergency Medical Services Committee deals with concerns relating to pre-hospital and emergency care, passenger and motor vehicle safety, fitness to drive, disaster planning, trauma care, and accident prevention.

The committee liaises with relevant government ministries, CanDRIVE, RCMP, ICBC, BCAA, AAA, Emergency Health Services Commission of BC, St John Ambulance, Emergency Physicians Association of BC, Safe Start Program, and CMA - Emergency Medical Services Committee.

 

Current Issues / Projects

  • Child/adult restraints in motor-vehicles

  • Emergency department overcrowding

  • Disaster planning: e.g. earthquake and pandemic preparedness

  • Mandatory assessment and treatment of alcohol impaired drivers

  • Breathalyzer-linked ignition interlock devices

  • Hazards posed by drivers using cellular telephones

  • Automatic defibrillators: placement on BC Ferries

  • Commercial licensing of insulin-dependent diabetics

  • Liability protection for physicians who report unfit drivers -clarification of the new provisions in Sect. 230

  • "Do Not Feed Me" as an advance directive: implications for patients and physicians

  • Strategies to deal with road racing and “road rage”

 

Future Plans

  • Planning for the next major revision of the Guide for Physicians in Determining Fitness to Drive a Motor Vehicle. The Guide is found online at www.drivesafe.com along with proposed updates, and useful links. The committee will also continue to liaise with the CMA on the CMA Guide to Drive.
     
  • Honoring Dr. Herb Parkin’s contribution to health promotion and the BC Ambulance Service

 

Committee Membership

The Emergency Medical Services Committee would welcome the addition of a Trauma Surgeon with affiliation on the American College of Surgeons Trauma Committee.
