To keep the Home Page tidier and still give you easy access to proposed New Guidelines, this Parking Lot section contains expected revisions for a six week period before implementation.

Most new recommendations have been reviewed and recommended by other respected organizations, such as the CCMTA, before they appear here.

We endeavour to make evidence-based revisions but the necessary research has not always been completed before there is a need to address a fitness-to-drive issue. In these cases, recommendations may be expert consensus-based.

Wherever possible, suggestions for functional assessment methodologies will be included in the new revisions.

Publication in this format allows further opportunity for input by practising physicians, and other stakeholders, before the guidelines are implemented.

This is organized as a "Push Down List" with the newest of the Recommendations appearing on the top of the column to the right of your screen (i.e. reverse chronological order).

The "Parking Lot" was started in the spring of 2005.

College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC Newsletter

May, 2003 - The spring 2003 issue (#40) of the College Quarterly announced Amendments to the Motor Vehicle Act that now provide liability protection to BC practitioners when they report a patient to the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles because of the existence of a medical condition that makes it unsafe to drive. The newsletter also announced that, for your ease of reference, the Guide for Physicians in Determining Medical Fitness to Drive a Motor Vehicle is now available electronically at this web site.

BCMA Board Endorses Continuing with the "Guide to Drive"

April 12, 2003 - The Board of Directors of the British Columbia Medical Association passed resolutions supporting the continued development of the Guide to Physicians in Determining Medical Fitness to Drive. The last full edition was published in 1997 and was used as a model for the CMA Guide. The Board also endorsed shifting to evidence-based recommendations from the mostly expert-opinion-consensus model used in the past.
